I must admit I love my bed. We bought the frame at this eclectic shop on Carey St. in Richmond. The minute I saw this bed I fell in love with it. The color, design and feel were so unique. Everytime I crawl in I find comfort in my soft mattress, firm down pillows, and cozy flannel sheets. Despite the love of my bed, I would gladly exchange it for a different one if it meant I could travel.
My travels have allowed me to sleep in more beds than I can count. Some of these beds were so comfortable I never wanted to leave while others were so uncomfortable I couldn't wait to jump out at the first sight of daylight.
At this point in my life there are three beds that have significant memories for me:
- My room with a view. A little twin bed in a convent in Rome, Italy. A beautiful yet simple room with tile floors, a sink & mirror and plenty of religious objects. The bed I slept in was right next to the window with a wonderful view of the Vatican. Every morning I would just lay in my bed and enjoy this amazing view. It was a wonderful way to wake up and just thank God for this amazing opportunity.
- During a trip to Puerto Rico we received a spontaneous invitation to go to the island of Culebra. We were warned that the house was being renovated due to the last hurricane but that it was close to the beach. That's all I needed to hear. I love the beach so I convinced my husband & sister to go. But once we arrived in Culebra we found out that the house was in worse shape than we had imagined. In fact the first night (the only night! LOL!!) we spent at the house we met a friend who happened to be an engineer who told us the wiring in the house wasn't installed properly. He told us, "this place could go up in flames at anytime!" And after seeing some bugs crawling around this was not what I wanted to hear. I contemplated sleeping out on the deck but I knew that wouldn't seem right. So my husband, sister, and I were given 3 cots to sleep on that night. My sister & I refused to sleep with any sheets since they didn't smell good nor did they look clean. Our room was hot, humid and filled with screenless windows. That night we bathed in mosquito repellant. I refused to take my shoes off in case the house went up in flames during the night I would be ready to run out of the house. My sister & I laughed so much that night because we couldn't believe where we were sleeping. I'm telling you it was crazy! The family who invited us over were so sweet though and really tried to make us feel comfortable. So even though our stay wasn't comfortable I'll always remember the incredible hospitality they offered us that night.
- Every Thanksgiving we stayed at the Pension Bichler in Austria. Four amazing days filled with skiing, good company, and the best comfort food. The family that owned the pension were so welcoming. And the beds were no different. Two full size beds put together with big fluffy down comforters to keep you warm & toasty through those cold nights. Being away from our families during the holidays was really tough but we found comfort at the Bichler. It was like we were sleeping in our own beds... we had found our home away from home.
Perfect. A bed for each corner of the world. You're speaking my kinda language. I loved what you did with this prompt!
